Fri 03.29 - Sunday, March 31, 2013 -Grassy Island Youth Turkey Hunt - thanks to South Florida Water Management District and the Florida Sportsmen's Conservation Association. Huntmaster - Paul Hickman

Highlights by Bishop Wright:

Florida Sportsmen's Conservation Association (FSCA) members have lobbied the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to work with FWC and the Youth Hunting Program (YHP) on SFWMD lands that were not big enough to host public hunting opportunity. In  2011 the FSCA request  came in an answer of 3400 acres of Grassy Island becoming designated to the youth hunting program.  The past two years YHP has had turkey hunts, hog hunts and deer hunts. The SFWM is also giving opportunity on STA 2 for a youth hunting alligator hunts.  It is great to see Water Management District making opportunities like these available for our next generation that will help FSCA and other clubs introduce them to hunting public lands.

This was the third turkey hunt hosted by (FSCA) the location of property is just north of Okeechobee City.  Without a doubt it is true Florida country the way it used to be.  All five youth hunters enjoyed their time in the woods on Easter weekend where they had the time of their life.  The YHP harvested one hog even though all hunters had opportunity, but just didn’t feel comfortable about their shot. That is why we call it hunting not killing.  The group hunted turkeys both Saturday and Sunday morning and hogs on Saturday night. While they were in their stands they also observed plenty other wildlife.

Thanks to FWC, SFWM, for giving FSCA volunteers an opportunity to make this possible. Here is a list of participants for their Third annual Youth Turkey Hunt on Grassy Island.  Person of Contact: Scott Sommer, Huntmaster: Paul Hickman,  Cook: Bishop Wright, Jr., Guides Coordinator: Robert Anderson. The awesome guides were: Tom McWatters, Jack Bylsma, Robert Hickman, Kerry Garceau, and Sam Smith.  Would also like to thank each hunter’s guardian for taking the time and spending a great weekend with their young hunter in the woods. The experience was awesome and looking forward to many many more on this beautiful piece of property.  FSCA thanks everyone who made this happen. FSCA’s next youth hunt is an alligator hunt in April on STA 2 for five youth hunters

We sponsor introductory, instructive youth hunts for deer, turkey, hogs, waterfowl, small game and other species. Hunts include mentors, lodging and meals.
